Education in Turkey

In Turkey, the growing number of universities, research centers, and academicians together with the size of internationalization are making an unprecedented change in the higher education field in the country! In the last decade, the number of international students studying in Turkey has increased by 75% according to current figures. Turkey; now, hosts 154,500 international students; thus, becoming one of the most significant host countries for international students. Turkey aims to increase this number to 200,000 students by 2023. Higher education in Turkey consists of bachelor, master, and doctoral programs. It is also supplemented by their own faculties and institutes including vocational schools and conservatories consisting of private and state universities. There are 206 universities in Turkey including 129 public universities and 77 private universities. According to 2018 data, the number of students studying in these universities is near 7.5 million, of which 154,500 of them are international students from 195 countries worldwide.

Being part of the Bologna Process since 2001, Turkey enables students From all over Europe to study at their universities and colleges since the Bologna process ensures comparability in the standards and quality of higher-education qualifications. Turkey; as a result, recognizes diplomas from other European countries (part of the Bologna Process) adheres to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation  System (ECTS).

Additionally, Turkish universities provide the choice of language used in teaching at the universities; students can choose between Turkish and English since both languages are available at specific universities all over Turkey.

HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM IN TURKEY

The higher education system in Turkey is supervised by the Council of Higher Education (CoHE). The CoHE is an autonomous institution that is responsible for the planning, coordination, and governance of the higher education system in Turkey in accordance with the Turkish Constitution and the Higher Education Laws. Universities decide upon their own academic calendars; however, an academic year generally starts in September and ends in June. There are winter and summer breaks. Summer school is also available at some universities. Turkish universities offer * Associate's degree programs * Bachelor's degree programs * Graduate programs * Post-graduate programs.

Associate's Degree Programs:
Associate's degree programs take 2 years. Vocational high school graduates can qualify for associate's degree programs without taking any centralized exams.

Bachelor's Degree Programs:
Bachelor's degree programs generally take 4 years. Specialized bachelor's degree programs, such as medicine (6 years), maybe longer.

Graduate Programs:
Universities in Turkey offer a wide range of graduate programs. While master's programs take about 2 years (non-thesis master's programs generally take 1½ years), doctoral programs take about 4 years.

Post-graduate Programs:
Post-graduate opportunities are also available in universities in Turkey. Duration depends on the program and university.

The Turkish National Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (TYYÇ):
The National Qualifications Framework for Higher Education in Turkey (TYYÇ) developed with reference to the Qualifications Framework of the European Higher Education Area and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning was adopted by the CoHE in 2010. The levels of the TYYÇ with reference to the European overarching qualifications frameworks as well as that to ECTS credits and student workload are shown below.
